Visitor and Student Visas: Protect Your Status

B-1, B-2 and J-1 visas are acquired through your country of origin. They are typically granted for six months. U.S. Customs has the authority to shorten that time, and every visitor visa is stamped with an expiration date upon entry to the United States. Students must be accepted by a sponsoring school, and have only a limited ability to work in the United States on a student visa.

If your visa expires, you are "out of status." Before your visa expires or you become out of status, in many cases you can apply for an extension to stay longer. If you are out of status for more than six months, you can be barred from re-entering the U.S. for three years. If you are found to be out of status for 12 months or more, you can be deported and barred from re-entry for 10 years!
